What do you know about me?

This week: Claude AI has quietly dropped two new memory features that could leave users scrambling to keep up. In this issue, I break all the ways AI stories memories and how (and why) you should do a memory audit every week.

Hi Reader

What does AI know about you?

This is a question I often ask when I am speaking and when i start working with a new client. There are two ways to answer that question. People generally think it means: What does AI surface about you.

But increasingly we need to pay attention to: what does AI hold in its internal memory when you prompt or chat?

The second one has been on my mind this week, ever since Claude AI released two major memory updates this summer.

The long and short of it is that if you use Claude AI, the platform's memory of you and your chats is not stored in one place. For Claude Projects this is especially problematic as each project's memory is created and stored separately. So if you manage 12 projects, and Claude remembers one detail, "Loves puppies and long walks on the beach" that detail could appear in multiple places.

Not a problem if you really do love walks on the beach. But if Claude gets the details wrong, or elevates something that shouldn't be elevated, you need to go on an archaeological deep-dive to find and delete all the wrong data.

In this week's article, I break down how memory works, and why a weekly five-minute memory audit is a really great idea.

What Does AI Know About You?

One of the first things I recommend with new clients is that they ask AI: “What do you know about me?”

They are often surprised by how quickly AI picks up random details about them—and how easily those details become part of the context shaping the responses you get from AI.
